Congratulations to Daniel Vine ... the Greys Junior Bank National Champion 2016/17
Seventeen talented young anglers from around England attended Greys Junior Bank National Final at Ellerdine Fisheries on Sunday, 9th April, 2017 and it was Daniel Vine, aged 15, from Co Durham who emerged victorious and took the title of National Champion 2016/17.
Anglers were greeted with bright sunshine and a brisk wind as they arrived at the fishery and it was never going to be an easy day's fishing for anyone, however each and every angler was determined to enjoy themselves and eager for the competition to get underway.
The morning session was filled with anglers catching a variety of rainbow, tiger, brown and blue trout. England Youth Fly Fishing team member Seth Mayhew-Tuson set the standard catching five fish from his peg, the first three coming from the first three casts.
Due to the weather, lunchtime provided a welcome break and a chance for the anglers to not only rest but try and work out how many points they had and where they were in comparison to others fishing.
The afternoon session saw the predicted drop in catch rate, but not in morale of the anglers. Every angler stayed positive and worked hard to try and produce the next fish but it was Louis Masserella who stole the afternoon with his beautiful brown trout, which went on to win him the ‘Best Fish’ and a GTS 500 5/6/7 reel.
The continued effort of James Penwright throughout the day also saw him bag himself a Greys Telescopic Landing Net for the ‘Best Effort’.
Competition sponsors Greys Fishing ensured that every angler left with a bag full of goodies consisting of a platinum fly line, a small slot fly box, a reel case and a tapered leader, gifts very much appreciated by the participants.
The top three rods on the day were:
1st - Daniel Vine successfully netted 12 fish for the total of 19 points. First place earned Daniel the prize of GR70 9ft 6in rod, GTS 700 5/6/7 reel, telescopic landing net and fly line medium sink 6.
2nd – Ben Fox with 11 fish and 17 points. Ben took home with him a GR70 9ft 6in rod, GTS 700 5/6/7 reel and telescopic landing net.
3rd – Seth Mayhew-Tuson with an impressive 12 fish for 16 points. Third place landed Seth a GTS 700 5/6/7 reel and telescopic landing net.
Corina Smith from the Angling Trust commented: "Even with the relentless sun each and every angler fished exceptionally hard on the day and demonstrated extraordinary determination and skill throughout.
"On behalf of the Angling Trust and the participants we would like to thank Greys for the continued support and sponsorship of the event and to our excellent hosts Edward and Jane at Ellerdine Trout Fishery for their hospitality and for making family and friends welcome which contributed to providing a memorable day for all involved.
"Finally, we would like to thank parents and anglers for taking part in the competition. We are looking forward to the 2017/18 competition already and details will be announced early summer 2017.”
