Register now for Catch a Crucian Month
Registrations are now open for 'Catch a Crucian Month' - a special photographic competition organised by the Angling Trust and the National Crucian Conservation Project (NCCP) in partnership with the Association of Crucian Anglers. This year features new prizes and an opportunity to fish a great new crucian water holding genuine three pounders that is normally reserved for members only.
The competition is open to all and runs throughout June. It is designed to promote crucians as a species, to assist in the recognition of true crucians, to encourage more anglers to take up crucian fishing and to highlight the need to develop specific crucian waters.
In addition to the generous sponsorship from Bait-Tech and Angling Direct each of the four main winners will win not only a £100 Angling Direct tackle voucher, plus a special Bait-Tech bait bucket containing crucian groundbaits, pellets and additives but also a special presentation crucian float hand-made by traditional floatmaker specialist Andrew Field.
There are four categories for entries with the best three photos in each going into in a final:
- Best Crucian Picture
- Best Short Crucian Video
- Best Scenic Picture of a Crucian Water
- Best Picture of a Junior with a Crucian
Entries are free of charge and will be online via the special competition website. Simply click here to register then go catch your crucian anytime in June and get snapping and filming.
Since its launch three years ago, the NCCP has inspired interest from all over the country with clubs and fishery owners creating a number of new, bespoke crucian fisheries. They were often helped by the Environment Agency's fish farm at Calverton which increased its production of true crucians to support these stocking initiatives. Crucian production at Calverton between 2013 and 2016 saw a staggering total of 152,046 DNA tested crucians stocked into 195 separate waters.
Just to show that big crucians are not confined to a handful of Surrey stillwaters, Scunthorpe Amalgamated Anglers have generously offered anglers the opportunity to fish one of their strictly members-only waters on a special day ticket during the Catch a Crucian month of June this year.
Yaddlethorpe Ponds is a superb fishery and a great example of pond restoration with confirmed DNA tested crucians to over three pounds.
Located near Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, anglers will have the choice of two ponds on site - one containing only crucians and the other a mixed species water. Both will be available to fish on a £5 day ticket, strictly dawn till dusk. All tickets must be pre-booked by phone through the fishery manager Andy Bettiss.
Martin Salter, National Campaigns Coordinator for the Angling Trust, said: "We are delighted to be able to add to the great prizes on offer in our Catch a Crucian photo competition this year. These handmade floats crafted from gull quills and kingfisher feathers are incredible works of art that will look equally good on the wall of a fishing den or riding the surface of a crucian pond for those brave enough to use them!
"The competition went down really well last year and it is great that Bait-Tech and Angling Direct are happy to continue their generous sponsorship. We've changed the categories this time to offer a new prize for the best short, home-made video capturing the charm of crucian fishing. More and more anglers are using video to record their exploits on the bank and we felt the competition should reflect this trend."
Angling artist and competition judge Chris Turnbull said: "Andy Bettiss kindly came along to our last National Crucian Conservation Project meeting and gave a fascinating presentation about the great work that Scunthorpe Amalgamated Anglers have done in restoring the ponds at Yaddlethorpe to make a great crucian fishery where once there was only dereliction. We are most grateful that they are opening up the ponds as their contribution to Catch a Crucian Month and wouldn't it be nice if one of the winning pictures came from there?"
