Slater stays the course at Stillwater Championships

Winner Still Champs press release 2017

A prize fund of £3000 was up for grabs in the Angling Trust and Canal and River Trust Stillwater Championships Final fished at Boddington Reservoir. The noted ‘beach’ area made famous in the 90’s was the preference at the draw due to some form earlier in the week, but on the day conditions saw the wind blowing into the dam wall and all the talk at the draw was of the potential for the fish to follow the wind.

As the hooter sounded it was Michael Slater who got off to a flier on peg 94 on bomb and pellet, netting eight carp in the first hour with only the odd fish being caught around him.

Stillwater Champs Final 2017

Top Three - Left, Winner - Michael Slater, Central, Second - Kerry Mcmahon, Right, Third - Dave

For Kerry Mcmahon on the next peg 95 it was a slower start and after a decent spell of feeding a switch to the pellet waggler saw him put a great run of decent sized carp together. With an hour to go it was thought by most that Kerry had got himself into the lead and was a couple of fish ahead of Michael.

A mad last hour saw both anglers filling their third net and both ended up with around 30 fish a piece, it was going to be very tight and only the scales could separate the two anglers.

First to weigh was Kerry and his fish weighed an incredible 125.620kg, a tense weigh in then ensued on Michael's peg. It was only after Michael’s fourth weigh that the result started to materialise as Michael was only a few kilos behind with five fish still in his net.

They proved to be just enough to pip Kerry to the title and the winner’s cheque of £1200. Michael’s catch went 127.680kg, a mere 2kg (under one fish) ahead of a crestfallen Kerry, but he was the first to congratulate Michael on his win.

Dave Perry took third spot from the lucrative beach section. Peg 93 was his home for the day and Dave also fished bomb and pellet to take 67.580kg.

Malcolm Bond rounded out the top four with an impressive catch from the last two hours. Malcolm changed tact to fish distance method feeder with a wafter hookbait to take the final money place with 60.160kg.

The Angling Trust would like thank Canal and River Trust for their support with the matches, special mentions must go to Dick and Sheila Pilkington for their tireless work across a lot of the heats and the final and to Carl Nicholls for running the matches in this popular competition.
