Angling is enjoyed by about 4 million people and generates about £3.5 billion to the UK economy. Its benefits to the economy, environment and society are not properly recognised, valued or reflected in government policy. Angling needs greater recognition and support for its role in conservation, social cohesion, crime prevention and as a healthy, wholesome pursuit which people of all ages and backgrounds can do together or on their own.

Far too many policies and Government Acts are produced which fail to acknowledge angling and its importance to society. Television programmes about rivers or the sea rarely mention angling, and if they do it is in passing. The few TV programmes made about angling are often by celebrities with little or no knowledge of the issues affecting anglers, even though they prove popular with the public. There is very poor understanding and representation of our hobby in the media.

Mainly this is because of ignorance, but it can be a result of anti-angling attitudes. The only way to change this is to provide high quality information and filming opportunities to the media.

What we will do:
  • Continue to promote the positive side of angling, including angling projects for disadvantaged young people, cleaning up and improving the environment and providing disabled access to fisheries.
  • Provide a positive reflection of angling on our web site.
  • Develop a political manifesto for all political parties to endorse before the Election.
  • Attend all the party conferences to promote angling and encourage greater awareness of the issues affecting anglers.
What we could do with more resources:
  • Produce high-quality materials and web resources promoting angling to government at every level.
  • Employ a professional public relations team who could promote angling to the wider public.
  • Work with television production companies to develop new programmes which show angling in its best light and highlight the many environmental and other challenges anglers face.
  • Work closely with each political party to develop policies to deliver the demands set out in our angling manifesto.
  • Meet with Natural England, British Waterways, the Local Government Association and a host of other organisations to promote the importance of angling and to ensure that it is properly recognised in their policies.
