ENGLAND U20 WORLD CHAMPS SQUAD ASSESSMENT DAY – APPLY NOW!

The Angling Trust has opened applications for experienced young anglers to be part of the England U20 squad for the 2024 World Championships this summer.

We’re looking for the best youngsters aged between 16 and 20 years old to book their place at a special assessment day where team the manager and coaches will select six exceptional anglers to represent England.

The U20s romped to victory in Portugal last year with an amazing performance which saw them take team gold and individual gold and silver medals. This year the squad will be heading to Serbia to fish the DTD Canal, and team manager Jason Kirk wants to keep the winning streak going.

Open to all anglers aged under 20 years old on December 31, 2023, we want you to apply now to be part of an assessment day on Saturday April 6, 2024, at Meadowlands Fishery, near Coventry.

Jason is looking for anglers with both pole and running line experience, those who regularly compete in matches on natural waters, and youngsters who have the right attitude to work as a close-knit squad.

Successful applicants will be invited to the assessment day where Jason and his team of coaches will put them through their paces.

“Serbia will be about catching catfish on a slider at range and pole fishing for carassio and silverfish closer in so we’ll be looking for anglers who can fish both of these methods to a high standard,” explained Jason. “We’ll be asking the anglers to fish slider for the first two hours and the pole for the second session.”

The U20 World Championships takes place in Serbia from August 5 to 10, 2024. Closing date for applications for the assessment day is Friday March 8, 2024.

NEWS: ENGLAND U20 SQUAD SELECTED FOR 2023 WORLD CHAMPS IN PORTUGAL

Angling Trust Team England U20 manager Jason Kirk has named his squad for this year’s World Youth Championships following an action-packed assessment day at Barston Lakes.

Fourteen anglers between the age of 15 and 20 were selected to attend the session on the main lake at the Midlands’ complex and they all got to show off their skills with two hours of big waggler fishing ahead of a two-hour stint on the pole.

All those who attended gave a good account of themselves, making the choice for the final six a difficult one for the management team with just the finest of margins separating the lads.

Travelling to tackle the River Sorraia near Corruche in Portugal in early August will be Joshua Duffy, Callum Jennings, Billy Kirk, George McHugh, Louis Morris, and Alfie Nicholls.

“The standard of anglers was incredibly high,” admitted Jason, who led the U20s to a team silver medal in Slovakia last summer. “In fact, I could have picked two teams from the lads who fished today.

“It was the hardest of decisions, but the squad selected has a wealth of experience with an eye on the future too. Congratulations to the six who have been selected to travel and thank you to all the lads who took part this year.”

The U20s will be joined in Portugal by the Guru-backed U15 squad and Sensas-sponsored U25s with each side vying for gold medals on the venue which regularly hosts World events but is notoriously difficult to crack under the extreme temperatures.

* The Angling Trust and U20 management team would like to thank Barston Lakes for hosting the event and all the parents and coaches who supported the day.

This year’s triallists were Adam Bayliss, Joshua Duffy, Harry Franklin, James Geddes, Austin Jennings, Callum Jennings, Billy Kirk, Connor Lamb, Jacob Lees, George McHugh, Matthew Mollart, Louis Morris, Alfie Nicholls, and Max Owen – and we’re proud of them all!
