WELLS WINS ANGLING TRUST SEA LEAGUE FINAL 2025
Kent angler Tom Wells has won the Angling Trust Sea League Final 2025 after one of the closest finishes in its 26 year history.
Hosted on a chilly promenade at Silloth, in Cumbria, the Deal-based rod finished the day with 228 points courtesy of 14 fish – a mix of flounder, whiting, and dabs – the largest a 34cm flounder.
It was a close contest though, runner up Rob Tuck, from Essex, led for most of the match but a quiet last quarter of the four hour contest saw him just a few points adrift on 214 from his 12 fish. Third went to Kent’s Nathan Elliott with five fish for 119 points.
This final was the first with Anyfish Anywhere and Asso who replaced Penn as the Sea League sponsors following a 25 year partnership.
Thanks to their generous support, winner Tom walked away with £1,000 worth of tackle prizes.
“Congratulations to Tom and all the anglers who made it to the final this season,” said Anyfish Anywhere’s Julian Shambrook, himself a former final winner. “This is a tough competition to win as you’re fishing against the best, most consistent match anglers in the country.”
The final presentation also saw the retirement of the competition’s original Penn trophy. The Angling Trust and new sponsors presented the famous trophy to England international Saul Page in recognition of the Kent ace’s historic four Sea League wins on the bounce from 2021 through to 2024.
The Deal-based star also holds the record for the most league wins with five victories: his first title being earned back in 2016.
“The Sea League has enjoyed celebrating many legendary winners since its creation in 1999 and through its partnership with Penn has seen it become a mainstay in the shore fishing calendar,” said Steve Fitzpatrick, Angling Trust Head of Competitions.
“This final was the first of a new era and it was a fitting that we were able to present the old trophy to an angler who has not only embodied the spirit of the competition but broke its records along the way.”
* The Angling Trust would like to thank all the anglers who take part in the competition, Sea League national organiser Ian Bowell, sponsors Richard Yates and Julian Shambrook, Simon Hogan for pegging out, and the Royal Air Force Association Club for hosting the draw and presentation.
