Let’s Go Fishing By The Sea! – AMHI deliver first ever sea-fishing event at Shoreham Port and it was EPIC!
Let’s Go Fishing! – this time by the Sea and an Epic Day full of fishing fun, smiles and amazing colourful species!
The first-ever sea fishing event for AMHI was held on 14th June 2025 at Shoreham Port and it truly exceeded their expectations.
AMHI which stands for the Angling for Mental Health Initiative – had a great turnout, created some unforgettable fishing moments and it was great to see some familiar faces come along and have another go at fishing, which shows that the newcomer anglers are starting to get the angling habit and come back for more fishing! This helps reinforce new angling skills which they pick up at introductory sessions. Some of these new skills might have been used in a different fishing environment altogether – for example, the knots and some basic items of tackle like hooks, line, weights, bait and lures are often interchangable – you can use the same items you use for freshwater coarse angling, to go fishing in the sea – as this event proved!
The event was also attended by Graham Mabey, Regional Angling Development Officer for South East England and Event Organiser Ben Harrigan told us:
“We ran two brilliant sessions on the day, with around 30 people in total. Everyone caught including ome stunning species – from playful gobies and vibrant ballan wrasse, to feisty sea bass, a slippery eel… and yes, there were also plenty of crabs too! The event went very well, and a big shout out to Shoreham Port Authority on partnering with us this year and helping us use the venue, accessto the port and its facilities.”
Laughter, high fives, and coastal camaraderie made it a day to remember for all. See some photos below and on the AMHI Facebook page.
Ben from Angling for Mental Health Initiative added:
“Massive thanks to everyone who joined us – we couldn’t have asked for a better crew. Already buzzing for the next event! Also a big thank you to: Shoreham Port for working with us and allowing us the venue and Brett Lomas Lagoon Bait and Tackle for supplying the bait. If you’ve got your own snaps from our recent event, we’ve made it super easy to share them – we now have a dedicated photo upload page here. Also, if you enjoyed the day, please consider leaving us a review here – it really helps us grow and continue running these special events. Thanks again for being part of it!”
AMHI (Angling for Mental Health Initiative) are part of the Angling Trust’s Get Fishing for Wellbeing Project – they are an approved delivery partner that run fun, safe and friendly events which are all-inclusive and are always mindful of the needs of those who want to get into fishing as a way to help overcome social issues such as loneliness, isolation, low-income, mental and physical health, wellbeing and awareness. AMHI also champion the way that the simple act of going fishing – sometimes even just accompanying a freind or relative who is an angler – can bring proven improvements for many people who go fishing.
We’re helping to organise Get Fishing Events in your area. Events are added to our website and social media all the time so, please check our Get Fishing events diary for new events near to you.
The Get Fishing campaign is funded by
The Angling Trust’s Get Fishing campaign to get more people fishing more often is funded by the Environment Agency from fishing licence income as part of the National Angling Strategic Services contract with the Angling Trust, and Sport England. Children under 13 do not need a licence, and licences for children aged between 13 and 16 are free but you still need to register and receive a licence before you go fishing. You can get a licence for the full year, for 8 days (ideal for holidays!) or just a day’s fishing.
NOTE: Although young children who are under 13 year old do not need a licence to fish, the person supervising them needs to have the proper fishing licence before they take hold of the fishing rod or help the child fish with it.
