Bronze for England at Five Nations Fly Champs
A fine day two performance saw the Angling Trust Team England Fly Fishing Men’s team secure a share of third place in the weekend’s 10th Five Nations Fly Champs in Inverurie, Scotland.
After a mixed start on day one, better scores filtered in to see the team join Ireland’s Green side in the bronze medal position, France claiming silver and hosts Scotland Blue the gold after two days of action across the River Don, Lochter Stillwater and Lintrathern Loch.
The match demanded all-round skills with anglers fishing both from bank and boat on the lakes and on running water, England’s captain Mark Withyman leading them on day one with a win in his sector on the river thanks to 18 trout, the Don producing plenty of fish compared to the tougher lakes. At close of play, Scotland Blue led, followed by France and then Ireland Gold.
Come day two, Mark again put in a great performance, winning his sector on Lochter with seven trout, Sean Brooks taking second and first in his two sessions on the Don banking 36 trout in total. After the results were counted up, Scotland and France remained in gold and silver, the race for third seeing big changes as Ireland Gold slipped off the podium to be replaced by their Green side and of course, a very happy England quartet of Mark, Sean, Simon Clarke and Bernie Maher.
Team result:
1 Scotland Blue (Steve Corsar, Mike Cordiner, Bob Robertson & Derick Logan)
2 France (Frank Tardy, Dimitri Dezothez, Manu Ardeff & Laroch Gargnier)
Jt3 England (Mark Withyman, Sean Brooks, Simon Clarke & Bernie Maher) and Ireland Green (Campbell Baird, Robert Flahery, Peter Corcoran & Jack Maher)
Individual result:
1 Steve Corsar, Scotland Blue
2 Dimitri Dezothez, France
3 Scott Robertson, Scotland White
