Building Bridges Project brings young people and families together for a fantastic day of fishing
The Angling Trust’s Building Bridges Project and Fisheries Enforcement Support Service were the guests of Cheshire Police when they came to support a youth fishing match at Bay Malton Angling Club. The event gave young people between 9 to 16 the chance to enjoy a fun day of fishing, with coaching and guidance for anyone new to angling.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service took time to share important safety information to help the youngsters when by the water. The Smiles to Come CIC organisation also joined the event, offering fun bank-side activities.
The Angling Trust team used the opportunity to promote the FishNET course, helping anglers learn more about fishing rules, safety and good practice.

This successful day showed how angling can bring people and organisations together. These working partnerships are essential, building strong communities and ensuring the future of our sport.

Events like these are essential for securing the future of our sport. By encouraging young people and families to get involved, we’re building a new generation of anglers and promoting the positive benefits of fishing for wellbeing, community engagement, and environmental awareness.

The Get Fishing campaign is funded by

The Angling Trust’s Get Fishing campaign to get more people fishing more often is funded by the Environment Agency from fishing licence income as part of the National Angling Strategic Services contract with the Angling Trust, and Sport England. Children under 13 do not need a licence, and licences for children aged between 13 and 16 are free but you still need to register and receive a licence before you go fishing. You can get a licence for the full year, for 8 days (ideal for holidays!) or just a day’s fishing.
NOTE: Although young children who are under 13 year old do not need a licence to fish, the person supervising them needs to have the proper fishing licence before they take hold of the fishing rod or help the child fish with it.
