Angling Trust sets out vision for coastal growth in Welsh Sea Angling Manifesto
The Angling Trust has launched a new Welsh Sea Angling Manifesto, setting out a clear plan for how policymakers can support a thriving, sustainable sea angling sector across Wales.
Published to coincide with the Senedd elections, the manifesto highlights the significant economic, environmental and cultural value of recreational sea angling, and calls on newly elected Senedd Members to work in partnership with the sector to unlock its full potential.
Sea angling already contributes to coastal economies across Wales, supporting charter operators, tackle shops, accommodation providers and local businesses. With the right backing, it has the capacity to deliver year-round tourism, skilled jobs and long-term environmental stewardship.
The manifesto focuses on practical, deliverable actions to improve access, strengthen coastal infrastructure and ensure sustainable fisheries management, while protecting Wales’ rich marine heritage for future generations.
Key Priorities
The Angling Trust is calling on the Welsh Government to:
- Recognise sea angling in policy and planning
Embed recreational sea fishing within marine, tourism and coastal growth strategies, and promote Wales as a premier angling destination. - Invest in coastal infrastructure
Improve access through upgraded slipways, harbours and fishing platforms, and reopen key venues such as Mumbles Pier, Fishguard Breakwater and Llandudno Pier. - Develop a national sea angling strategy by 2030/31
Co-designed with stakeholders, this strategy would guide sustainable fisheries, boost tourism and ensure better data for decision-making. - Unlock potential of iconic Welsh fisheries
Support the growth of species such as bass and bluefin tuna as sustainable recreational assets, learning from successful international models.
Gareth Henson, Welsh Policy Officer at the Angling Trust, said:
“We’re looking forward to working with new Senedd Members to ensure sea angling is recognised for the economic, environmental and social value it delivers across Wales.
“This manifesto sets out a clear and practical pathway to grow the sector sustainably – supporting coastal communities, improving access for anglers, and protecting the fisheries that make Wales such a special place to fish.
“With the right support, sea angling can play a major role in strengthening coastal economies and creating high-quality, year-round tourism opportunities.”
