HELEN CROWNED WORLD CHAMP IN SERBIA
Women’s World Championships – August 2023
England Ladies team stalwart Helen Dagnall got the reward she’d earned after her long tenure in the squad by winning this year’s Ladies World Championships in Serbia.
The Dunavac Canal in Apatin proved a tough one for all involved and to finish with a section win and second was a remarkable achievement.
The peggy venue and poor draws hurt England’s chance of team victory with the squad of Helen, Sam Sims, Abbi Kendall, May Potter, Leanne Knott, and Kayleigh Dowd finishing in sixth overall behind winners Croatia.
Manager Dave Brooks said: “We were mainly fishing for skimmers and pommies with the odd roach and bleak and practice sessions seemed to go very well giving us confidence going into the match.
“Unfortunately, three of the girls struggled to catch on the long line as conditions on the canal changed on the day and we ended up with a disappointing 43 points and 9th.
“Going into the second day we decided to tweak things slightly and fish for bleak for the first part of the match and just keep having a look on the long line until the fish arrived.
“This proved to be crucial, and we ended up third on the day with 26 points. Helen won her section and the match with 10.930kg, Leanne won her section with 9.250kg and was second in the match, and Sam finished third in her section.
“The team managed to come 6th overall with 69 points with 51.5 points needed for a medal.
“We’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who supported the team with fundraising, Sensas for supplying the groundbait, Willy Worms, and all the lads on the bank – it wouldn’t be possible without you all and we do appreciate all the effort you put in!”
