BARNSLEY CLAIM WORLD CLUB CHAMPS INVITE WITH VICTORY ON FLOAT NATIONAL
The unstoppable Drennan Barnsley Blacks made it a weekend to remember on the Gloucester Canal by winning the Angling Trust Float National just a day after claiming the Division 1 National title.
The victory – thanks to an impressive 11 section points from their five-man team – secures them a guaranteed invite to the FIPS World Club Championships in Slovenia next Summer.
Barnsley’s golden celebration came courtesy of section wins for James Dent with 11k 125g of skimmers from peg B6 on Permali Wall and Alan Scotthorne’s 5k 400g bag from peg 169 at Rea down. These were backed by a second for Matt Godfrey, a third for Frankie Gianoncelli, and skipper Lee Kerry’s fourth place.
This was six points too strong for big rivals Sensas Starlets who carded 17 points for second while third-placed Drennan Bordon were separated from Daiwa Dorking, both on 21 points, on a weight countback.
With bloodworm and joker allowed for this international-style competition, the nine elite teams found a few extra fish on the stretches from Monk Meadow Dock down to Rea Bridge.
It was the famous Netheridge area which produced the best weights, the pick of them was a bream and skimmer catch of 16k 150g taken by Drennan Leicester Van Den Eynde’s Leo Verdi at peg 39.
The top three anglers all came from the same section with silver medallist Mike Dalziel, of Drennan Bordon, ending the day with 13k 225g from peg 42 and Barnsley’s Frankie Gianoncelli weighing 13k 075g from 62.
* The Angling Trust would like to thank Mark Treasure, Kevin Forty, and all the amazing team and club stewards for helping to stage the event along with the Gordon League Rugby Club for providing the HQ.
