SUPER SAUL WINS PENN SEA LEAGUE FINAL
England international Saul Page has won sea angling’s biggest competition – the Angling Trust Penn Sea League final – in a hard-fought match in Norfolk.
Fishing on a blustery Weybourne Beach on the county’s picturesque north coast, the big final was a showdown for 50 of the country’s top shore anglers who had been invited to go head-to-head after a year of point scoring matches.
Open to all, over 18,000 anglers took part in Penn point scoring matches in 2023 and on the shore on Saturday were a host of international anglers and sea angling superstars all vying for the title.
Winner Saul, from Deal, Kent, picked up £2,000 of Penn prizes after finishing with 123 points for the year, leading a strong chasing pack including Grimsby’s George Smith in second on 90 points and Old Colwyn’s Shane Russell in third place with 79.
With the final league table wrapped up in December, the top 50 anglers were then invited to this weekend’s match where a £1,000 Penn tackle prize and the famous trophy was awarded to the winner.
Each zone winner also collected Penn Fathom II Casting Special reels worth £250 each.
Saul is one of just a handful of anglers who have done the double, winning the League and Final in the same campaign, finishing the day with 44 fish for an incredible 915 points.
He had a flying start to the day too, his first cast producing a 55cm bass within four minutes of the whistle! A steady stream of whiting and dabs for the rest of the day sealed the victory.
Runner up Daz Newland made the journey from the Isle of Wight to Norfolk and finished with 33 fish and 478 points just ahead of Garry Hutson, from Cleethorpes, on 31 fish and 442 points.
* The Angling Trust would like to thank Penn for their continued sponsorship of the competition, Sir Michael Savory and the staff at the Muckleburgh Military Collection for the HQ, Norfolk Angling Club for the use of the beach, National Organiser Ian Bowell, and all the anglers and match organisers for ensuring the event remains the number one in the match calendar. The Angling Trust Penn Sea League is run with the support of Sea Angler Magazine.
