Charity fishing event to promote benefits of fishing on health and wellbeing
The organiser of a charity fishing event aimed at raising awareness of how fishing benefits mental wellbeing says fishing has been his “lifesaver”.
Michael Bromley has organised a 48-hour carp fishing match at Peatmoor Lake in Swindon starting Friday (August 16th) with money raised going to local charity IPSUM which supports mental health and wellbeing in the surrounding area.
Michael said that fishing had “helped save my life” after suffering complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of childhood abuse.
“Fishing gives me a reason to get out and the benefits of sitting amongst nature are outstanding,” said Michael.
“I was inspired by how much fishing and being in nature has helped so I started a campaign – Fishing 4 Mental Health Awareness Day.”
Michael added that IPSUM was the organisation that helped him when he was at his lowest point.
“I would like to thank the 14 anglers taking part in the match, the two marshals and all the people who have supported me in this cause.”
He hopes to eventually get a Fishing 4 Mental Health Awareness Day in the calendar where clubs up and down the country can open their waters to people in their local community to learn about fishing, catch a fish or two and experience the benefits that fishing can offer.
The 48-hour carp match has the support of some of the biggest names in angling including Bob Nudd, Will Raison and Ali Hamidi, as well as Korda, Parker Baits and Angling Direct.
If you want to support the event or more information, please contact Michael via email: fish4mentalhealth@gmail.com. A fundraising page has been created here: https://www.justgiving.com/team/fish4ipsum
