Designing Engaging Coaching Programmes

Inspiring coaches to think outside the box

As a licensed angling coach, you are not limited to traditional “lessons”. Coaching can be delivered in many different ways to many different audiences, while still remaining structured, safe and high quality – whether you are volunteering your time or looking to develop paid-for sessions.

By designing clear session formats with defined time slots, you can:

  • Deliver consistent experiences
  • Adapt sessions across different angling disciplines
  • Reuse session plans with multiple user groups
  • Engage new and non‑traditional audiences
  • Build sustainable coaching programmes

Below are a range of delivery models and programme ideas to help you expand your coaching offer and reach wider audiences. Once you have designed your sessions, don’t forget to advertise them on Event Marketplace.

Intro to Angling Sessions

Ideal for beginners and first‑time anglers

“Intro to” sessions are often the first contact people have with angling. These sessions should be welcoming, simple, and well structured.

Key features:

  • Duration: Recommended 2 to 2½ hours
  • Focus: Fun, safety, and basic success
  • Audience: Complete beginners and curious newcomers

Disciplines might include:

  • Intro to Fly Fishing
  • Intro to Coarse Fishing
  • Intro to Carp Fishing
  • Intro to Sea Fishing

Well‑planned intro sessions give participants confidence, a positive first experience, and a clear pathway into further learning, including Angling Trust Get Fishing awards.

Progressive Angling Programmes

Developing skills over time

Progressive programmes allow learners to build skills gradually across multiple sessions. These work exceptionally well with groups who benefit from continuity and progression.

Ideal for:

  • School groups
  • Youth organisations
  • Community groups
  • Holiday and enrichment programmes

Delivery formats could include:

  • One session per week on a weekend.
  • 5 consecutive days during summer holidays
  • Regular sessions embedded into school timetables

Each session should build on the last, introducing new skills, techniques and understanding. Coaches are encouraged to align delivery with the Angling Trust CAST Awards, providing clear structure and nationally recognised progression.

Birthday Party Sessions

Fun, social and memorable angling experiences

Birthday parties are a fantastic way to introduce people to angling in a relaxed and enjoyable setting.

Key points for coaches:

  • Suitable for both juniors and adults
  • Focus on fun, shared experiences and participation
  • Sessions can mirror intro formats with a social twist

Adults are increasingly looking for unique birthday experiences, and a few hours on the bank or beach with friends and family is a great alternative to traditional celebrations.

Hen and Stag Parties

Unique outdoor experiences with a purpose

Hen and stag groups are no longer just about nightlife. Many groups now want an activity that is:

  • Memorable
  • Inclusive
  • Enjoyable for everyone

Fishing offers a calm, social and engaging experience that brings groups together outdoors. Coaches are not expected to work with inappropriate or unsafe groups – rather, to provide a structured, enjoyable activity as part of a wider celebration.

Corporate and Team Building Events

Let others sell the package – you deliver the experience

Corporate events can be highly rewarding, but they don’t need to be complicated.

Best practice approach:

  • Identify local corporate event providers
  • Introduce them to your coaching sessions
  • Allow them to include your sessions in their packages

Rather than designing bespoke corporate products from scratch, event companies can sell:

  • Intro sessions
  • Multi activity sessions such as fly tying, casting instruction, fishing and food preparation.
  • Group experiences

This removes much of the marketing and logistical workload while opening doors to new audiences.

Improver and Skills Focused Sessions

Supporting anglers to take the next step

Improver sessions give anglers the chance to refine specific skills and techniques.

Examples include:

  • Carp fishing: Feature finding and baiting.
  • Sea fishing: Casting improver session working on technique with a multiplier reel.
  • Fly fishing: Fly casting refinement and fly tying workshops.
  • Coarse fishing: Long pole clinics (12–16m), match tactics and venue strategy.
  • Lure fishing: Mastering different methods, reading the water, and handling pike safely.

These sessions work well as:

  • Bookable clinics
  • Small group workshops
  • Discipline‑specific masterclasses

They help retain anglers, develop confidence, and keep people engaged long term.

Structured Delivery Creates Flexible Opportunities

By designing structured sessions that can be adapted, coaches can:

  • Reuse session plans across disciplines
  • Work with different age groups and abilities
  • Expand their offer without increasing complexity

Thinking creatively about how angling can be delivered allows coaches to:

  • Reach new audiences
  • Build sustainable programmes
  • Showcase angling as an inclusive, modern activity

Today I’m going to teach someone something.

That mindset, combined with structured planning and creative delivery, is how coaching continues to grow and inspire.
