Pollack

A prized catch. A species under pressure. A future we must secure together.

Pollack are one of the most important target species for sea anglers in England — especially for charter boats operating in the southwest. For us, they’re more than just a fish: they’re a key part of our sport, economy, and marine heritage.

But pollack stocks are facing significant challenges. Scientific advice has triggered concern about their sustainability, and urgent action is needed to ensure this iconic species has a future in our seas — and in our sport.

Our Position

Responsible Fishing, Fair Access, Science-Led Policy

At the Angling Trust, we’re fighting to ensure that sea anglers continue to have access to pollack — but we’re equally committed to doing so responsibly and sustainably.

We support:

  • Science-based fisheries management

  • Sensible conservation measures, not blanket restrictions

  • Responsible release and handling practices to reduce mortality

  • Recognition of the socio-economic importance of pollack to our sector

Take the Pollack Pact

Let's Rebuild the Fishery

We’ve launched the Pollack Pact to promote responsible catch-and-release when targeting pollack.

By adopting the pact, anglers commit to:

  • Retaining a maximum of 5 pollack per angler per day
  • Avoiding pollack during the spawning season (Jan – Mar)
  • Releasing any fish under 50cm
  • Using descending devices to return undersized and unwanted fish safely
  • Minimising handling and release time
