Romanian kids Get Fishing via The Building Bridges Project

The Angling Trust’s Building Bridges team organised a coaching session for a Romanian school in London where  young people and families got a chance to try fishing in a safe, friendly, and educational environment!

The event was well attended and, nearly everyone caught some fish, many for the first time, whilst at the same time learning about how to fish responsibly, fish welfare, and the benefits of spending time outdoors.

For many, it was also an introduction to a new lifelong hobby!

Our sincere thanks goes to Barnes & Mortlake Angling and Preservation Society for kindly providing access to the lake, and also our dedicated Building Bridges volunteers who generously gave their time to help manage the day and support the coaching sessions.

At ‘grass roots’ level, the Building Bridges team assist and support angling clubs and fisheries by translating their rules into different languages and offering free multi-lingual signage and leaflets.

Working together with key partners and clubs, our staff host integrated angling events, bringing together anglers from different countries and cultures in addition to organising school visits and coaching days within migrant communities – giving many youngsters from diverse backgrounds an introduction to fishing in the UK.

Events like these are essential for securing the future of our sport. By encouraging young people and families to get involved, we’re building a new generation of anglers and promoting the positive benefits of fishing for wellbeing, community engagement, and environmental awareness.

The Get Fishing campaign is funded by

The Angling Trust’s Get Fishing campaign to get more people fishing more often is funded by the Environment Agency from fishing licence income as part of the National Angling Strategic Services contract with the Angling Trust, and Sport England. Children under 13 do not need a licence, and licences for children aged between 13 and 16 are free but you still need to register and receive a licence before you go fishing. You can get a licence for the full year, for 8 days (ideal for holidays!) or just a day’s fishing.

NOTE: Although young children who are under 13 year old do not need a licence to fish, the person supervising them needs to have the proper fishing licence before they take hold of the fishing rod or help the child fish with it.
