Coaching for mums and kids gets families fishing
Asfordby and Melton Society of Anglers’ showed what can be achieved with special mums and youngsters fishing events recently. Its bespoke angling coaching sessions introduce more women and families to the wonderful world of angling and the club continually helps families to enjoy fishing together.
Two of the Society’s Licenced Angling Coaches, Mike and Jenny Smith, have had a fantastic summer of fishing, introducing loads of new people to angling. They helped many young people develop their fishing skills and as a result this helped the anglers become confident and independent. The programme of events has has even included a bespoke session around ‘Angling Coaching for Mums’ which not only helped introduce more women to the benefits of fishing, but encourages families to fish together, proving that angling is a wonderful outdoor activity that everyone can enjoy together.

The club are one of over 80 projects to receive a grant through the ‘Get Fishing Fund’, made possible thanks to fishing licence income being invested by the Environment Agency. The fund will be open to applicants again towards the end of the year so keep an eye on the Angling Trust website for regular updates.
A massive well done to everyone involved in this project, for helping develop and continue new anglers to become confident, independent fishing licence holders.
We continually see the appreciation of these events through participants, parents, grandparents and guardians, who all leave with families eager to get back out onto the bank and spending some quality time together making memories by the waterside. Fishing brings new skills, an appreciation of the outdoors and the habitats where we spend time by water, and encourages patience and concentration as well as providing a personal challenge. The Get Fishing campaign is funded by

The Angling Trust’s Get Fishing campaign to get more people fishing more often is funded by the Environment Agency from fishing licence income as part of the National Angling Strategic Services contract with the Angling Trust, and Sport England. Children under 13 do not need a licence, and licences for children aged between 13 and 16 are free but you still need to register and receive a licence before you go fishing. You can get a licence for the full year, for 8 days (ideal for holidays!) or just a day’s fishing.
NOTE: Although young children who are under 13 year old do not need a licence to fish, the person supervising them needs to have the proper fishing licence before they take hold of the fishing rod or help the child fish with it.
