Virtual Fisheries Forum | Increasing Juvenile Salmonid Survival

How to improve chances for the 99% of juveniles doomed to die – Flooding and its impact on juvenile Salmonid Survival

Changes in climate, land management, and water resource management have sparked an increase in flooding events across the country. Intense winter storms have washed away the juvenile habitat within many spawning tributaries of Atlantic salmon and Sea Trout. The Lune catchment experienced this in 2015, losing three generations of salmonids to Storm Desmond and Storm Eva. Through inexpensive juvenile habitat restoration, Lune & Wyre Fisheries Association in partnership with Lune Rivers Trust has restored much of its previous juvenile habitat, increased resilience to future extreme weather events, and is seeing their work paying off with large increases in salmon and sea trout redds.

Join Andy Hurst from Lune & Wyre Fisheries Association in this Virtual Fisheries Forum and learn about their methods and success with

  • Gravel retention
  • Opening refuge ponds & side channels
  • Slowing the flow with ‘leaky dams’
