BLOG: Learning how to fish at Farnham Angling beginner fishing session

Farnham Angling Society have been awarded funding via the Angling Trust’s administration of its Get Fishing Funding from the Environment Agency. This money – which is from fishing licence income –  has enabled them and hundreds of other clubs, fisheries, coaches and organisations, to carry out work including training coaches, running events for newcomers and improving habitat for fishing activity. Farnham Angling Society have now run their first successful day and issued Bronze Get Fishing Awards to beginners

Rob Hill, from  Farnham Angling Society takes up the story from this recent weekend evens Alice Holt Lodge Pond:

As coaches, we were very pleased how the event went. As I said, this was the first time that we have run this, and we were pleased how smoothly the event ran and that everyone caught some nice fish. We were impressed by how much the children and adults got stuck in and the patience, interest, skill and enthusiasm that all the children showed.

Farnham Angling Society always welcome new members. We run adult and junior memberships. An adult member can bring up to 2 under 12s with them for free. If children get a junior membership their parents can accompany them. For under 12 year old junior members we mandate that they are accompanied by an adult. You can find more details about our club on our website: Farnham AnglingSociety

The website has details of the more than 30 venues that we provide (not all as easy fishing as Lodge Pond!!), photos of the fish that get caught and details how to join which you can do online.

Some of you have asked if your children can come back to the other sessions we are running this summer. Unfortunately, we are fully booked for all the sessions at the moment but if spaces do free up, I will advertise them. We will be running the event again next year so keep an eye out for details.

If anyone is interested in obtaining similar basic tackle that we used during the event I’d point you in the direction of Grant’s Tackle Up in Fleet. Grant helped me source the equipment and is a brilliant source of advice for anyone starting out into fishing and looking for info on where to fish, the right tackle to use and the best baits and day tickets available to use locally.

I’d lastly thank the Angling Trust and Environment Agency who provided us with a ‘Get Fishing Fund’ grant to part fund the equipment and help with the organisation of the event and Forestry England who run Alice Holt Forest and allowed us to use the venue and helped advertise the sessions.

Have a good summer and hope to see you and your children fishing in the future, and please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions!

We’re running more Get Fishing events all over the country for everybody, so please check our Get Fishing events diary for new events near to you. They are being added all the time and are all part-funded by the Environment Agency who also provide a FREE fishing licence for the event, that covers everybody while they are fishing. Amazing!

After the event ends we aim for participants to be better enabled to progress or complete their newcomer angler journey, and be ready to take the first-steps on their own visits to fisheries and venues where they can fish on their own as long as they have the correct rod fishing licence, some basic knowledge of how to catch and release coarse fish including carp, perch and roach, or catch game fish including trout at places that are geared up for that type of fishing with flies or trout lures.

Sign up for FREE Get Fishing email newsletters in a few seconds – you can unsubscribe any time but being part of the Get Fishing Club means entry into free prize draws, offers and discounts on brilliant beginner fishing tackle from our partners Angling Direct and Shakespeare.

What is the Get Fishing Fund?

The Get Fishing Fund has invested nearly £200,000 of fishing licence money to help get more people into fishing over the past year. The fund is provided by the Environment Agency and administered by the Angling Trust. The Environment Agency supports angling-based projects with grants of up to £2,500 to help purchase equipment, fishing tackle, resources and run fishing activities that give people the opportunity to get into fishing for the first time.

About Get Fishing

Get Fishing is the Angling Trust‘s campaign to grow participation in angling and get more people fishing more often. Annually, the Get Fishing campaign introduces over 30,000 people to angling at hundreds of fun, safe and friendly events funded by the Environment Agency from fishing licence income as part of the National Angling Strategic Services contract with the Angling Trust, and Sport England. Children under 13 do not need a fishing licence, and fishing licences for children aged between 13 and 16 are free but you still need to register and receive a licence before you start fishing. You can get a fishing licence for the full year, for 8 days (ideal for holidays!) or just a day’s fishing.

The Angling Trust’s ‘Get Fishing’ campaign is proudly supported by
Shakespeare, Exclusive Tackle Partner and Angling Direct, Exclusive Retail Partner
as we all work towards getting more people fishing, more often.
