Family fishing at Aston Park Fisheries where have a go at angling activity gets 80 people fishing

180 people took part in the event at Sheffield’s Aston Park Fisheries with a busy day of fishing where families experienced angling and set foot on a lifelong angling journey! 80 family members had a go at fishing with loads of support resulting in hundreds of fish being caught and safely released as part of the fishing lessons that day.

Aston Park Fisheries is one of the finest modern day fisheries in the Sheffield area. Set in over 25 acres of parkland, it’s a haven for nature in a natural and beautiful space where all kinds of anglers are welcome to try their hand at fishing.

Success! The Get Fishing Awards take newcomers through three simple stages of Bronze, Silver and Gold where progression towards the Get Fishing CAST Awards is an option. Regardless of next-steps, everyone who takes part in the Get Fishing Award will leave knowing how to set up fishing tackle, what to do with it, how to use bait and a landing net, how to catch and safely return a fish, and where to get a fishing licence so they can go it alone next time.

Aston Park Lakes are hosting all sorts of fishing activity this coming summer, including fishing matches every week that include Junior events organised throughout school holiday periods. If you or the ids are interested in taking part and building lifelong summer memories, simply check out their website and make contact with Alex Mitchell or one of the Team!

Thanks to Alex and Aston Park Fisheries for allowing Dave Munt, and the Get Fishing Event to use the lake and for providing free bait for the whole day. Most events like this are completely free, or very low-cost, and also include use of tackle, and of course the correct fishing licence, so that you can fish legally thanks to the Environment Agency.

The event and more like them, would not be possible without the Licensed Angling Coaches who supported the day with their patience and skills to help newcomer anglers on the day, and at hundreds of others in the Region (and thousands nationwide!) to get more people fishing more often – Dave Woodhead, Richard Jamieson and David Munt, Regional Angling Development Officer (North East) Angling Trust, david.munt@anglingtrust.net 07854 239 715 all provided their help on the day.

We’re helping clubs, fisheries, coaches and other organisations to run more Get Fishing Events like this in your area too, and in fact all over the country! Events are added to our website and social media all the time and at the moment, during our popular Spring into Fishing programme, every single day! So please check our Get Fishing events diary for new events near to you

The Get Fishing campaign is funded by

The Angling Trust’s Get Fishing campaign to get more people fishing more often is funded by the Environment Agency from fishing licence income as part of the National Angling Strategic Services contract with the Angling Trust, and Sport England. Children under 13 do not need a licence, and licences for children aged between 13 and 16 are free but you still need to register and receive a licence before you go fishing. You can get a licence for the full year, for 8 days (ideal for holidays!) or just a day’s fishing.

NOTE: Although young children who are under 13 year old do not need a licence to fish, the person supervising them needs to have the proper fishing licence before they take hold of the fishing rod or help the child fish with it.
