Make this a summer of fishing! Get into fishing at free and low cost activity events for families
School Summer Holiday is here so if you’re looking for things to do and what’s on this summer, activities for kids or a new hobby to keep children occupied – how about learning to fish! If you want to get into fishing or find fishing lessons for children where the whole family can get involved – whatever the weather – look no further than
Get outside – get fishing.
With so much tech in the home today it’s easier than ever to stay indoors and not spend time in the great outdoors. Fresh air, sunshine and open spaces are good for broadening horizons and pulling children away from screens and devices.
Learn new skills. Add fishing to your CV!
There’s more to fishing than meets the eye! It’s not just about catching a fish – get into fishing and you’ll find out about nature at the water’s edge, above and below water, where to go, what to use and how to use fishing tackle. This includes skills like learning a few essential fishing knots, how to cast, play and handle fish and the best bait to use depending on what you are fishing for. Fishing has loads of opportunities to maintain personal development during the school holidays too. Try it and see for yourself!
Time with family. Rain or Shine!
When the kids are at school, your quality time together is limited. Fishing is a quick-hit activity that you can combine with other things like walking and cycling. Now the summer holidays are here, spend a couple of hours at one of our fishing activity sessions to get into fishing and you will all pick up a new pastime that you can always fill a few hours with – rain or shine – nearly everybody lives just a few minutes walk or cycle from a place to go fishing. Make time for a new activity, and turn it into family time!
Stay active. Ban boredom!
If you want the school hols to be remembered for getting outdoors and active instead of seeing screen-time hours add up or hearing “I’m bored!” get outside, get into fishing, stay active, keep fit and find out just how much energy you spend when you go fishing. It’s not just sitting around waiting for a fish – angling involves casting, almost constant movement, finding the best place to setup and being almost constantly involved in working at catching a fish.
Catch up with friends while you catch a fish!
Going fishing can be a sociable activity or time to spend on your own or with a couple of friends. Whatever you prefer it doesn’t have to be a solitary activity though, and in fact fishing is massive on social media with all sorts of fishing groups covering everything from where to go, best catches and angling tips and tricks. Anyone who uses social media (and let’s face it that’s 99% of us!) will find they can combine a new-found love of fishing with social shares and likes. Our Get Fishing accounts are friendly and safe places where you can learn more about fishing before or after you come to a fishing event! Fishing is a way to get your young ones together so they can catch up with their friends or make new ones. If you know someone who goes fishing already, tell them about Take a Friend Fishing running this summer too. Discover nature above and below the water.
When you head down to the water’s edge you get to see all the wonders of what’s out there at your local pond, lake or river. From the plants to the wildlife – both in and out of the water. You’ll be amazed by all the different birds, insects, animals and even fish you can see – there’s always something happening.
Fishing is exciting! Come and experience the fishing buzz!
You might think fishing is slow and that you’ll spend hours waiting for the next fish to bite. Wrong! Fishing is so much more than this, you will be constantly thinking, planning or doing something about catching a fish. Then there’s a brand-new level of excitement when you hook a fish that can only be experienced in person. Don’t believe us? Find an event and try it for yourself!
Get Fishing for Wellbeing! Look after mental health
Angling is great at boosting mental health and wellbeing. Everyone can enjoy all the natural benefits of spending time in nature next to water because many things can affect our health and wellbeing – and sometimes these problems cannot be fixed just by medicine or visiting a doctor. Going fishing can really help people who have one or more long-term conditions, need support with their mental health, are lonely or isolated or who have complex social needs which affect their wellbeing.

The Angling Trust’s ‘Get Fishing’ campaign is proudly supported by
Shakespeare, Exclusive Tackle Partner and Angling Direct, Exclusive Retail Partner
as we all work towards getting more people fishing, more often.
The Get Fishing campaign to get more people fishing more often is funded by the Environment Agency from fishing licence income as part of the National Angling Strategic Services contract with the Angling Trust, and Sport England. Children under 13 do not need a licence, and licences for children aged between 13 and 16 are free but you still need to register and receive a licence in order to go fishing. You can get a licence for the full year, for 8 days (ideal for holidays!) or just a day’s fishing.
NOTE: Young children under 13 do not need a licence to fish but an adult person supervising them needs the correct fishing licence to take hold of the rod or to help the child fish with it.
