SPECIES HUNT 2023-24 SEASON – FINAL LEAGUES REVEALED
Congratulations to Martin Avons, Ben Price, and Reuben Judge who are the Angling Trust Tronix Pro Species Hunt champions for 2023-24.
Starting in April 2023 and running until the end of March this year, this fun, friendly competition is open to all and challenges anglers to catch as many different fish species as possible from the shore.
The competition is split into three leagues with tables for Seniors, Juniors, and Elite anglers – selected from the top 30 anglers the previous season.
This year saw both the Seniors and Elite leagues won with an incredible 66 species!
Heading the Elite League was Martin Avons, from Warminster, Wiltshire, who went one better than his second-place last year with victory this time, pipping last year’s champ Simon Lancastle, from Bridgwater, who finished with a creditable 62 fish. Thirsk allrounder Neil Stephenson ended his season on 54 species for third overall.
Pembroke Dock-based Ben Price claimed the Seniors League with 66 species ahead of Plymouth’s Alan Mundy on 59, and Luke Woodford, from New Milton, Hants, on 56.
Junior Species Hunt winner Reuben Judge led a tight table of talented anglers for many months and finished with 36 different species ahead of Zephyr Laramy on 33, and Will Birch with 32.
Angling Trust Head of Competitions, Steve Fitzpatrick, said: “A huge thank you to the hundreds of anglers who took part in Species Hunt this season, and to Tronix Pro for their continued support with great prizes.
“Congratulations to the winners, catching those numbers of different species takes an incredible amount of dedicated time and skill to achieve.”
In addition to the league tables, Tronix Pro reward big fish captures too with monthly specimen prizes up for grabs.
This season saw awards for a near record gilthead bream, plus thick-lipped grey mullet, smoothhound, bull huss, shore rockling, Dover sole, pollack, small-eyed ray, and a thornback.
We also introduced a summer species challenge for Junior anglers in 2023, which was won by Suffolk teenager Mark Banham who nailed seven of the eight target species during the school holidays – look out for more mini competitions again this summer!
