British record barbel provisionally accepted
The British Record (rod-caught) Fish Committee has received a claim for the barbel record from captor, James Crosby, in respect of a fish claimed at a weight of 22lb 1oz, caught on 30th November 2024 from Kings Weir fishery on the river Lea.
The BRFC has inspected the claim paperwork together with supporting photographic evidence and is pleased to announce provisional acceptance of the claim, at the weight of 22lb, pending formal ratification at the next meeting of the BRFC due to take place in June.
The provisional record weight has been adjusted to the nearest lower whole (one ounce) scale division following the scales test, which indicated that the true weight of the fish was slightly less than 22lb 1oz.
The current record barbel was caught from a river in Sussex by Colin Smithson in 2019 at a weight of 21lb 2oz.
The Committee would like to remind readers that in the event of the capture of a potential record fish, the captor should first contact the British Record (rod-caught) Fish Committee without delay.
Captors of potential record fish should contact the Secretary, Nick Simmonds, at the Angling Trust, on 01568 620447 or by email at brfc@anglingtrust.net
