MATCH TEAM AK MASTER THE FENS FOR DIV 2 GLORY
The final Angling Trust National Championships of the year saw a win double for Match Team AK on their local Fenland waters, the Cambridgeshire/Essex-based side returning 64 points on a tough River Great Ouse and Middle Level Drain to take gold by just five points!
Silver went to Colmic A4 with 69 points, followed by Preston Innovations Black Horse in the bronze medal spots with 72, nicking the verdict on total weight after tying with local lads Tackle & Bates Select.
However, the match was more than just about winning a medal. With 10 promotion places into next year’s Division One National up for grabs, the top three were joined in going up by Tackle & Bates Select, Wellingborough, Drennan RAF, East Lynx MG, Colin Barlow Sale AC, Holbeach DAC and Hull Works Sports.
Both venues were in a tough mood for the 23 teams, with the two sections of the Ely Beet AC waters at Queen Adelaide and Potters on the Ouse being the standout areas with plenty of fish to be caught. Elsewhere, it was a case of scratching out every single fish possible as the difference between scoring eight points and 15 was just 100g in many sections.
Being local, Match Team AK knew what to expect, returning a section win from individual winner Mark Campion, thirds from Val Coleman and Kevin Watkins, a fourth from Ash Kinsey and five points from Doug Richmond as their highlights. With 13 points their lowest score, it was an impressive team card on such moody venues.
Individually, Match Team AK man Mark Campion led the way from peg 4 on the Potters section of the Ouse, weighing in 8-275 of roach and a few perch as he enjoyed a bite a chuck all-day using pinkie over groundbait on the long pole. That also contributed a valuable section maximum towards the team score.
Biggest cheer of the day though, went to runner-up Dylan Egan. At only 13 years of age, he’s the youngest angler to win an individual medal in a senior National, Dylan’s 7-150 of roach and rudd taken on the pole from peg 22 from the neighbouring Queen Adelaide section. Expect to see plenty of wins from this young gun in the coming years!
That only left the bronze medal to be decided, East Lynx MG man Chris Hodgson picking that up with 7-100 of roach, rudd and perch from peg 20 at Queen Adelaide, a section that saw 5 kilos of fish only good enough for halfway in the section.
