TEAM SAUL PAGE TACKLE WIN ANGLING TRUST TEAMS OF FIVE FINAL 2024
Saul Page Tackle have scooped sea angling’s biggest team match event – the Angling Trust Teams of Five Final 2024 – with a dominating performance on the beaches around Hythe and Deal, in Kent.
The overnight leaders in the two-day competition with an impressive 24 points from Day 1, the Kent-based lads cemented their position at the top with a solid Day 2 performance, scoring 41 points for fourth on the day. They ended the weekend event on 65 points which was 15 ahead of runners up Arno Hooks.
Arno Hooks moved up from their third overnight thanks to a Day 2 score of 40 for a total of 80 overall.
Day 2 winners were Team Zziplex, who earned the third berth with 81 points after two days, just ahead of Channel Angling on 82 and Anglesey Bait Centre who were fifth with 112.
England international Saul’s star-studded side were led home by a second zone win of the weekend for the skipper himself, plus solid scores from Billy Johnson, Sam Collier, Dave Morris, and Nathan Elliott. Saul’s two wins over the weekend also saw him collect the individual title – the first places each day coming courtesy of bonus bass on Day 1, and a dogfish and bass double header caught in the middle stages of the match on Day 2.
It was a weekend where fish were at a premium for all 27 teams taking part. Small whiting fed in the Hythe sections each day, with mackerel also showing, but it was bonus dogfish, rays, gurnard, bass, and even some unseasonal mullet which made the difference across the five zones.
Individually, on Day 1 it was England international Sam Collier, fishing for Saul Page Tackle, who led the way with 21 dogfish from Zone B at Chequers in Sandwich Bay for a massive 1282 points.
Day 2 proved even more difficult for the 135 competitors as an easterly wind cut into the beaches, and bites were at a premium. It was North East Match Anglers’ Gareth Gardiner who headed the leaderboard with his seven fish for 390 points in zone C at Deal.
Overall, the individual title went to Saul Page ahead of runner up Gareth Gardiner – both recording perfect zone wins each day – with Tom Wells in third with three points, Jacob Gainy in fourth, and Louis Smith in fifth.
The Angling Trust would like to say a huge thanks to Rob Tuck and his team for running a superb event, the Grand Burstin Hotel in Folkestone for the HQ and, of course, all the anglers who supported the competition this year. See you in Skegness in 2025!
