RECORD FISH

New Crucian carp record – and angler claims his second British record fish

The BRFC met virtually by online Teams meeting, on 22nd November 2024.

Present were: Stephen Mardlin MBE (Chairman), Andy Nellist (Vice-Chairman), James Maclaine (Scientific Advisor, Natural History Museum), Nigel Hewlett (Freshwater Scientific Advisor), Will Barnard (Freshwater Specialist), Richard Poole (Wales Sea Angling Representative), Mat Mander (Sea Angling Specialist), Paul Edwards (Wales Game Angling Representative), David Craig (Ireland Sea An-gling Representative) and Nick Simmonds (Secretary).

Apologies for absence were received from: Mr Tim Froome and Mr Paul Coulson.

The committee considered and accepted the following record claims as being duly ratified:

Ringneck blenny (Parablennius pilicornis), caught by Peter Hegg from a Plymouth shore mark on 11th June 2024 and ratified at a weight of 17 grams. This new entry into the British record listings gives Peter his second current record, to go with his shore-caught Ballan wrasse of 9lb 1oz, unbeaten since 1998.

Crucian carp (Carrasius carrasius), caught by Adam Brookbanks from Barham Syndicate Lake, Ipswich on 9th September 2024 and ratified at a weight of 4lb 14oz.

The BRFC would like to remind its correspondents of the introduction of length-based record listings for sea fish, information about which was circulated in the BRFC’s press release of 25th June 2024 and which may be found here: BRFC introduction of length-based listings

The next meeting of the BRFC was scheduled for 13th June 2025.

The Committee would like to remind readers that in the event of the capture of a potential record fish, the captor should first contact the British Record (rod-caught) Fish Committee without delay.

Captors of potential record fish should contact the Secretary, Nick Simmonds, at the Angling Trust, on 01568 620447 or by email at [email protected] Nick will record the details of the capture and advise the claimant on progressing the claim.
