Fishing backs Women in Sport and says “This Girl Can Fish”

Women’s Sport Week returns this 19th to 25th June to champion a packed summer of fantastic women’s sport. The campaign coincides with this year’s “This Girl Can” campaign, a celebration of active women that aims to inspire females to exercise regularly and angling is backing both initiatives…

The coming months will see a host of women’s sporting events, including Women’s Cricket and Rugby World Cups and the Women’s European Football and Hockey championships. Angling is joining in too with its first ever multi-nation all female international, hosted by Team England between 22nd to 25th June as well as a host of female friendly Get Fishing” events run by the Angling Trust at venues across England.

The Angling Trust’s “Get Fishing” campaign has connected with the This Girl Can Team and produced a set of brand new posters that show how diverse angling can be, and that women of all ages can take part in this all-inclusive, healthy, family friendly and accessible sport from grassroots right up to elite level. Angling will soon be included on the This Girl Can website alongside football, golf tennis and rugby.

Get Fishing, run by the Trusts’ Participation Team will also be supporting Women’s Sports week on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to spread the word about angling’s involvement and using #WSW2017, #WomenInSport, #ThisGirlCan and #ThisGirlCanFish from Monday 19th onwards.

The posters are available from Get Fishing for sports clubs, fisheries, shops and venues to download, display or share on websites and social media to encourage female participation in angling.

Events at Get Fishing Events, organised by the Angling Trust and funded by the Environment Agency, are run to attract women men, girls and boys of all ages and abilities to try fishing, and get outdoors and active with friends and family by the waterside.

Many of the country’s top female competitive anglers started out fishing with their family at simple angling sessions like these. They’ve gone on to fish on the World Stage, and its apt that the forthcoming Tri-Nations Ladies International at Wraysbury will see Ladies Carp Team England compete against Dutch and Welsh counterparts in a marathon 72 hour fishing match for international Gold that happens during Women’s Sports Week.

Tracey Crouch, Minister for Sport, said: “We want more women and girls to get involved in sport and enjoy the huge benefits that being active brings to their lives. Women’s Sport Week is a fantastic campaign that encourages more women to try out a new sport or physical activity.”

Bev Clifford, Ladies Carp Team England Captain and angling publisher said: “I started fishing at a young age with my dad and brother and it was this that set me off on a lifetime of amazing angling experiences resulting in a successful career in angling and now, as a proud gold-winning competitor at international level I’m really pleased to see female angling involved in the Women in Sport and This Girl Can campaigns.”

Clive Copeland, Head of Participation at the Angling Trust said: “We know that women want to go fishing and we also want to join with other sports to make angling a realistic choice for busy people that love spending time outdoors. Hundreds of Get Fishing sessions that we’ve listed at Get Fishing near you have already brought thousands of females into or back to angling. Fishing is a fantastic way for people who might not normally consider sport to take part in physical activity or learn about the environment.”
