Barnet & District club gets the community fishing
Barnet & District Angling Club hold an annual “Angling Open Day” each spring that gives anyone the opportunity to try fishing for the first time, and helps the club attract new members.
Club Secretary Paul Hutton asked the Angling Trust’s “Get Fishing” campaign angling event coordinator for the south of England, Dean Asplin for advice…
Dean helped the club by sorting out an Environment Agency fishing license waiver so that all attendees would be able to fish for free on the day, with not only a temporary fishing licence but tackle, bait and a quality assured angling lesson included too!
About 50 people turned up to give fishing a go – a resounding success which paves the way for the club’s “Bring a Friend Fishing Day” on 28th September 2019.
Paul told us: “The club is encouraging the public and our members to bring someone along to try fishing, discover what it’s all about, get some free tuition and relax by our beautiful lake. It’s a great event for youngsters too and everyone is welcome, regardless of their previous angling experience.”
Dean added: “Get Fishing events like this are the perfect opportunity for families to get outdoors and active together. They are fun, safe, friendly – and free! Come and find out what fishing is all about this September with Barnet & District Angling Club.”

Clubs, fisheries, charities, schools and other organisations that would like a helping hand with running a fishing event can contact Dean Asplin for help with fishing licence waivers, advice and resources – dean.asplin@anglingtrust.net.
The Environment Agency fund the Angling Trust’s Get Fishing campaign to get more people fishing, more often. Money comes from the sale of fishing licences which are available at www.gov.uk/fishing-licences.
