Get Fishing, connect with nature and improve your mental wellbeing!
The Angling Trust’s Get Fishing campaign to get more people fishing more often. We will be supporting Mental Health Awareness Week on our social media during the week – 10th to 16th May. The theme this year is ‘Nature’ so it’s an ideal opportunity to emphasise the positive benefits that going fishing can have, especially on people’s mental health and well being!

Emma Harrison (pictured) recently blogged about her experiences getting back into angling – she told us about the benefits to her own health and wellbeing that fishing has:
“I’m completely hooked on fishing and the benefits it offers to our mental wellbeing. Fishing for me allows me to gather my thoughts and learn to appreciate the little things in life
Listening to the birds, feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin and waiting for that float to go under, it’s simply am amazing hobby to take up.
But… fishing is more than “just fishing” it’s become my main form of support to help me with anxiety, depression and complex PTSD. In this regard it has been my “lifeline” and a way to “escape” everything for my own wellbeing.
Fishing can be a hobby, a sport, something to enjoy or love, an opportunity to switch off or relax, it can be our exercise and it is something we have in common with all other anglers, it is a brilliant way to spend time with family and friends and it’s a great way to challenge yourself. I’d love to see more people go fishing and experience themselves all these benefits for their own mental health and wellbeing.”

About We Fish as One:
We Fish as One is the promotional campaign behind our Strategic Vision for Inclusiveness and Diversity in Angling. The official launch will happen in June. We want YOU to get in touch about your own experiences of inclusivity in angling – be they good or bad! We also want to hear from clubs, syndicates, fisheries and any other organisations or venues that pride themselves on being a place that is inclusive to females or other less well-represented communities as well as all-comers who want to get into, return or enjoy the health, wellbeing and competitive aspects that make fishing such a great sport-for-all. We’ll promote the work you are doing. Be part of “We Fish as One” – contact admin@anglingtrust.net. Please include “We Fish as One” in the subject line – we will treat all emails as confidential.
