Angling Trust welcome CEO’s assurances over barge restrictions on the Aire and Calder
The Angling Trust have welcomed assurances provided by the Canal and Rivers Trust’s CEO over restrictions placed upon a commercial barge responsible for fish deaths on the Aire and Calder Navigation in West Yorkshire.
In a letter to the Angling Trust, Chief Executive Richard Parry has detailed restrictions they have placed upon the barge and made a commitment to investigate what additional action is required to protect the fish.
He says they “will continue to consider further restrictions if necessary and are insisting that the barge operator ensures that these restrictions are observed” and adds: “I can assure you we are doing what we can to resolve this matter without any further harm to fish stocks.”
The Angling Trust had written to the CRT in support of two angling clubs – Mirfield and Walton – who had raised concerns that fish kills in the Knottingley area had been caused by the commercial barge. CRT believe mobilisation of silt as the barge passes along the waterway may be a specific contributing factor in fish mortality in that area.
Jamie Cook, Angling Trust CEO, said:
“Mirfield and Walton angling clubs had raised the issue locally but were unable to instigate a change, so I am pleased that the Angling Trust are able to support our member clubs in escalating this issue and getting a positive response.
“We welcome Richard Parry’s intervention and his assurances over the restrictions placed upon this and other large freight barges causing damage to fish stocks. We will continue to work with the local clubs and the CRT fisheries team, with whom we have a strong working relationship, to report further instances and ensure that these fish kills are stopped.”
The Angling Trust are a membership organisation fighting for fish, fishing and the environment which any individual, club or fishery can join. For more information visit our membership section.
