Fishing “should work hard to be inclusive” – We Fish as One Campaign Champion Carl Nye on diversity in angling

Carl Nye is a dedicated angling coach who works tirelessly to reach many families in and around Get Hooked On Fishing’s venue at Ealing. After just completing a hugely successful National Fishing Month this August, Carl shares some words of wisdom on how in challenging times, the angling community can make positive changes and bring fishing into the lives of more people.

National angling charity Get Hooked On Fishing is is no stranger to its local communities. A dedicated team of committed staff and volunteers at its Northolt, London HQ means this fishing venue is an ideal We Fish as One pilot site.
Get Hooked On Fishing is a beacon for how angling can enhance the world and the people in it. The charity recently showed huge innovation by organising a family fun day in partnership with mental health charity Mind, Barclays Eagle Labs and Swimbooker, and brought together supporters and stakeholders to find out more about how fishing is a force for change.
We talked to Carl about his work at Get Hooked On Fishing to get some real-life insight into angling inclusivity. Carl said:
“I’m really proud of the work we do at Get Hooked on Fishing, because while the sport is accessible, more needs to be done to make fishing inclusive to people in Ealing, including disabled people and people from diverse backgrounds.
“Many of the barriers to fishing start with learning how and where to fish. Tackle shops can be daunting places to beginners and to anyone who doesn’t feel represented in the sport. It is really important that angling infrastructure is welcoming and accessible to newcomers.
“The fishing world should work hard to be inclusive of its local communities – this requires real commitment – otherwise it’s nothing more than a ‘Boys Club’.
“I love the work we do with young people who have had challenging starts in life, and the demand is huge. With the cost of living crisis and parents looking for affordable things to do to entertain the kids, fishing is the perfect option. Getting kids fishing for the day boosts their mental health and wellbeing and can’t be beaten.
“At Get Hooked on Fishing we promote getting set up to begin fishing with a £20 whip, and we also work to secure funding to offer events for free.
“We wouldn’t be able to do the fantastic work we do without the dedication of our volunteers. They help us establish our reputation within the community where families enjoy creating many happy memories when they come fishing with us.”

About We Fish as One – #WeFishAsOne
We Fish as One is the Angling Trust’s long-term community inclusion campaign that aims to actively develop and profile local outreach programmes and activities. This will harness the power of fishing as a community building activity, so that people from all backgrounds can experience the life-changing benefits of the sport of angling.

Capitalising on the recent interest in angling during and since Covid lockdowns, the campaign promotes the sport’s community building opportunities, mental health benefits and consistently strong safeguarding record. Angling has a unique and timely offering to address key insights that speak of ongoing barriers to inclusivity.

Currently just 7% of people who fish identify as ethnically diverse and a recent OnePoll survey for the Angling Trust revealed that 1 in 20 (6%) respondents said they didn’t feel represented in angling based on their gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnic diversity or culture. Seven We Fish as One pilot sites across England have been identified as places to generate community partnerships, with particular focus given to: Women, parents and carers, ethnically diverse groups, young people, disabled people, LGBT+ communities and those with long-term health conditions.

The Angling Trust’s We Fish as One campaign is duel funded by Sport England through its Uniting the Movement vision and the Environment Agency through rod fishing licence income.

The Angling Trust’s ‘Get Fishing’ campaign is proudly supported by
Shakespeare, Exclusive Tackle Partner and Angling Direct, Exclusive Retail Partner
as we all work towards getting more people fishing, more often.

The Get Fishing campaign to get more people fishing more often is funded by the Environment Agency from fishing licence income as part of the National Angling Strategic Services contract with the Angling Trust, and Sport England. Children under 13 do not need a licence, and licences for children aged between 13 and 16 are free but you still need to register and receive a licence in order to go fishing. You can get a licence for the full year, for 8 days (ideal for holidays!) or just a day’s fishing.

NOTE: Although young children who are under 13 year old do not need a licence to fish, the person supervising them needs the proper fishing licence to take hold of the rod or to help the child fish with it.
