NEW BLOG: Get Fishing Awards get people into fishing with beginner sessions at Milton Country Park Fun Day – more events to come!
Blog Post: By Jack Culpin Regional Angling Development Manager (East of England), Angling Trust
What an amazing day we had at Milton Country Park Fun Day. We were fishing on Hall’s Pool for the Get Fishing Awards as part of the fun day
People of all ages came to fish for the first time with 14 participants completing their Bronze Award, 1 achieving Silver and 1 more their Get Fishing Gold Award.
The fish were very obliging – with lots of bites and fish caught throughout the day. We caught crucians, rudd and two tench.
The children and adults really enjoyed themselves and said they’ll be back to complete their silver and gold awards on another day which was great to hear.
It’s so rewarding to help people catch their first fish, learning to catch and safely return them too is part of the process, as well as how to use the right tackle.
Helping people get outdoors to enjoying not just the fishing but nature at its best is one of the rewards of ,my work as a Regional Angling Development Manager.
It was also lovely to hear the fun they had on the canoes and other activities adjoining the fishing section of the event.
We’ll be running more Get Fishing Awards during the half-term and summer school holidays so always check our Get Fishing events diary for new events near to you.

The Get Fishing campaign is funded by
The Angling Trust’s Get Fishing campaign to get more people fishing more often is funded by the Environment Agency from fishing licence income as part of the National Angling Strategic Services contract with the Angling Trust, and Sport England. Children under 13 do not need a licence, and licences for children aged between 13 and 16 are free but you still need to register and receive a licence before you go fishing. You can get a licence for the full year, for 8 days (ideal for holidays!) or just a day’s fishing.
NOTE: Although young children who are under 13 year old do not need a licence to fish, the person supervising them needs to have the proper fishing licence before they take hold of the fishing rod or help the child fish with it.
