Get Fishing Fund – Funded Project: Derby Young Anglers Project benefits from Angling Trust’s Get Fishing Fund
The Derby Young Anglers Project have been busy this Spring getting loads of new people into fishing.
Supported by an army of volunteers, the project offer a variety of fishing options from developing simple fishing skills to more complex angling techniques. The group are doing a fantastic job in not just introducing people to angling but helping them develop as anglers.

The group are one of over 80 projects to benefit from a Get Fishing Fund grant this year. Thanks to the Environment Agency, the fund reinvests fishing licence income to provide resources to support activities to get more people fishing more often.

Over the past 5 years £600k of fishing licence income has been invested to help get thousands of new people fishing.
“The latest Derby Young Anglers’ Project Event was held at Woodrow’s Pond on Saturday 17th May. Huge thanks as ever to the great band of helpers whose expertise and commitment is ensuring we are providing quality coaching for the large number of attendees we are getting at all the events.
“I know because of the massive demand this year we’ve not been able to accommodate all the youngsters who want to try fishing but we’ve squeezed as many in as we safely can. Twenty-one youngsters this time! We hope too that the information we provide of similar angling events being put on by other organisations is ensuring that everyone who wants to can have a go at fishing.
“Whilst Woodrow’s with a north-easterly wind blowing was in a fickle mood all the young anglers caught. The events now have a wide spread of angling ability so different activities were on offer to match and develop the various skill levels. Complete beginners caught their first fish, our “match squad” received practice and coaching, running line fishing was on offer and Josh Ludlow, who now has CAST Level 4, helped with the coaching. A varied fare.
“All the core events are oversubscribed now (sorry) but we are providing additional skills practice including match fishing for our CAST Level 2 and above young anglers.”Steve Clamp

The Earl of Harrington’s Angling Club is a not-for-profit organisation run solely for its members. The Club was created by the then Earl of nearby Elvaston Castle in 1912 who took the role of Chairman of the Club. His Estate included much of the River Derwent to the south of Derby around Borrowash. The club’s river fishery now extends from some 2 miles north of Derby, above the weir at Darley Abbey, downstream to Borrowash, some 5 miles south of the city. We’re running more Get Fishing events all over the country for everybody, so please check our Get Fishing events diary for new events near to you. They are being added all the time and are all part-funded by the Environment Agency who also provide a FREE fishing licence for the event, that covers everybody while they are fishing. Amazing!
After the event ends we aim for participants to be better enabled to progress or complete their newcomer angler journey, and be ready to take the first-steps on their own visits to fisheries and venues where they can fish on their own as long as they have the correct rod fishing licence, some basic knowledge of how to catch and release coarse fish including carp, perch and roach, or catch game fish including trout at places that are geared up for that type of fishing with flies or trout lures.

What is the Get Fishing Fund?
The Get Fishing Fund has invested nearly £200,000 of fishing licence money to help get more people into fishing over the past year. The fund is provided by the Environment Agency and administered by the Angling Trust. The Environment Agency supports angling-based projects with grants of up to £2,500 to help purchase equipment, fishing tackle, resources and run fishing activities that give people the opportunity to get into fishing for the first time.
About Get Fishing
Get Fishing is the Angling Trust‘s campaign to grow participation in angling and get more people fishing more often. Annually, the Get Fishing campaign introduces over 30,000 people to angling at hundreds of fun, safe and friendly events funded by the Environment Agency from fishing licence income as part of the National Angling Strategic Services contract with the Angling Trust, and Sport England. Children under 13 do not need a fishing licence, and fishing licences for children aged between 13 and 16 are free but you still need to register and receive a licence before you start fishing. You can get a fishing licence for the full year, for 8 days (ideal for holidays!) or just a day’s fishing.
The Angling Trust’s ‘Get Fishing’ campaign is proudly supported by
Shakespeare, Exclusive Tackle Partner and Angling Direct, Exclusive Retail Partner
as we all work towards getting more people fishing, more often.
