Reel Education – Huge success for school linking education in Environment, Nature and Angling

The Angling Trust were approached by Headlands School head teacher and keen angler, Sarah Bone, after she saw an article in the Angling Times about our Reel Education programme.

The Reel Education project is currently only delivered in primary schools, however following discussions we decided to run a pilot event and trial some games and activities for students who were assigned within the Alternative Provision educational setting – and what a huge success it was!
The school, in Bridlington, was keen to start its own angling club so that their pupils can get out on the bank regularly and approached the Angling Trust for advice on how to do this. It was decided to start teaching angling techniques in school so that when the pupils got to the bank, they already had a good idea what to expect and how to set up tackle ready for a day’s fishing.
Reel Education Manager (North), Chris Holden and Regional Angling Development Officer for Yorkshire, Mark Gambles, held some introduction to angling sessions that involved casting games, knot tying, setting up a pole and covering other topics such as water safety and rod licensing requirements. The school then arranged a day out fishing at a local venue which was a huge success with all the pupils – and teachers – catching fish and earning their Silver Get Fishing Award.
A full report on the trial has been written by teachers showcasing the positive effects and the benefits to the pupils involved in the initial pilot. The school is going to start their angling club in 2025 to enable a whole new generation of anglers to give fishing a go! The school is also supporting a teacher to become a qualified Level 2 Event Lead Coach with the Angling Trust’s licensed coaching scheme.
Reel Education is jointly funded with our Exclusive Fishing Tackle Partner, shakespearefishingeu. The in-school days were organised by the Angling Trust’s Reel Education team which is funded by fishing licence income and delivered in partnership with the Environment Agency.

The Reel Education project is a Free primary school resource that has been developed by the Angling Trust and Shakespeare Fishing Tackle. Lesson plans and activities have been created by teachers, for teachers and are linked to the national framework.

With a focus on Art, Maths & Science in curriculum-based activities as well as P.E and games led by licensed Angling Trust coaches the all-encompassing Reel Education resource demonstrates the link between Environment, Nature and Angling.

Reel Education will come in to the school and run a full day of exercises, activities and lesson plans that can lead to next-steps follow-up attendance at optional, fishing events run by the Angling Trust all over England – the aim being to introduce pupils to the outdoors and provide a lifelong connection to all of the educational, health and wellbeing benefits that the wonderful world of angling brings to people of all ages and backgrounds each year!

The Get Fishing campaign is funded by

The Angling Trust’s Get Fishing campaign to get more people fishing more often is funded by the Environment Agency from fishing licence income as part of the National Angling Strategic Services contract with the Angling Trust, and Sport England. Children under 13 do not need a licence, and licences for children aged between 13 and 16 are free but you still need to register and receive a licence before you go fishing. You can get a licence for the full year, for 8 days (ideal for holidays!) or just a day’s fishing.

NOTE: Although young children who are under 13 year old do not need a licence to fish, the person supervising them needs to have the proper fishing licence before they take hold of the fishing rod or help the child fish with it.
