Get Fishing for Wellbeing News

Angling supporting Sport England’s new ‘We Are Undefeatable’ campaign

An inspiring new campaign – We Are Undefeatable – has today been launched to support the one in four people in England who live with long-term health conditions like depression, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, anxiety and Parkinson’s. The Angling Trust is supporting the campaign by encouraging people to try fishing as a way of moving more, being active and helping with health conditions like these.

By recognising the unique barriers that people with health conditions face, the new We Are Undefeatable campaign aims to help people build physical activity into their lives, by hearing from others who have become more active through the ups and downs of living with their condition. Going fishing is a great way to incorporate physical activity into everyday life as it can be done at a wide range of places near to home, can be incorporated with other things like walking to the shops or cycling to work, needs hardly any equipment, is low cost and can take 30 minutes or a whole day – however long you want to go for!

People living with a long-term health condition are twice as likely to be inactive despite evidence that being active can help manage many conditions and help reduce the impact and severity of some symptoms.

Even small amounts of activity can make a significant difference to overall health and wellbeing. That’s why fishing is a perfect fit with We Are Undefeatable.

Led by a collaboration of 15 leading health and social care charities, the campaign is backed with expertise, insight and National Lottery funding from Sport England, the organisation behind the award-winning This Girl Can campaign which the Angling Trust’s Get Fishing Campaign has been involved with as a Key Partner in previous years.

The We are Undefeatable campaign will run across TV, radio and social media, encouraging people to visit www.weareundefeatable.co.uk and use #WeAreUndefeatable for inspiration and tips on how to get active in ways that suit them.

As well as this, campaign support packs are being distributed to every GP surgery and community pharmacy in England as part of a wider programme to support healthcare professionals to promote physical activity to their patients.

Clive Copeland, Head of Participation for the Angling Trust said: “The Angling Trust wholeheartedly supports the We Are Undefeatable campaign and will continue to help make angling accessible for all abilities: from the fit and healthy to those suffering from debilitating conditions, from the young to the old and from the experienced to the complete novice angler. Angling has the potential to be undertaken and enjoyed by anyone. There should be no age, ability or social barriers preventing people taking part, and in 2016 to 2018 up to four million people are estimated to have been fishing. Fishing is a sport for all to enjoy and our Get Fishing campaign aims to make it easy for all-comers regardless of health or ability, age, gender or background. We welcome anyone seeing the We Are Undefeatable campaign to come fishing at get fishing events and not only discover how easy it is to go fishing but experience how fishing can so significantly benefit physical and mental health.”
