Get Fishing Fund – Funded Project: The Derby Young Angler’s Project angling clubs together to get kids fishing
The Derby Young Angler’s Project is a collaboration between local angling clubs that have joined forces to organise events and activities that provide the perfect environment for people new to angling to get into fishing. The project recently received funds from the Get Fishing Fund provided by the Environment Agency and administered by the Angling Trust that has invested nearly £200,000 of fishing licence money to help get more people into fishing over the past year!
Project’s coordinator and Licenced Level 2 Angling Coach Steve Clamp give us a run down of the project’s first event that has been funded by an application to the Get Fishing Fund from the Environment Agency, administered by the Angling Trust:
“The first Derby Young Angler’s Project event of the year took place on Sunday 14th May at Poyser’s Pond, Sawley.
Coaches and helpers from three local angling clubs, the Earl of Harrington AC, The Pride of Derby AA and Derby Railway Angling Club provided skilled one-to-one guidance and ensured that all the participants caught.
In still, warm conditions perch, bream, roach and carp all came to the youngsters’ nets as they were coached local coaches and volunteers. One coach – Rich Pope recorded a standout achievement when first-time angler Jacob Weever caught the event’s largest fish, a 3lb 8 oz mirror carp!
This fish currently tops the series Bifg Fish League!
As well as the angling fun, £300 was donated by The Pride of Derby AA from its second-hand tackle sale so that the Young Anglers’ Project can run similar activity for newcomers at local venues including the Earl of Harrington AC’s Woodrow’s Pond – a brilliant venue for beginners to get into fishing.”
Find out more about all of the clubs involved as well as the local venues they can provide access to for members including young people, who they are very keen to get fishing at events programmes that run right through the year, and which are a brilliant way to get children and adults to get out and get fishing!
This project is one of over 200 projects nationally that have benefitted from an investment from the Get Fishing Fund.

About Get Fishing
Get Fishing is the Angling Trust‘s campaign to grow participation in angling and get more people fishing more often. Annually, the Get Fishing campaign introduces over 30,000 people to angling at hundreds of fun, safe and friendly events funded by the Environment Agency from fishing licence income as part of the National Angling Strategic Services contract with the Angling Trust, and Sport England. Children under 13 do not need a fishing licence, and fishing licences for children aged between 13 and 16 are free but you still need to register and receive a licence in order to go fishing. You can get a fishing licence for the full year, for 8 days (ideal for holidays!) or just a day’s fishing.
