Bass Fishing Measures For 2021

The government rolled over the 2020 bass fishing measures into 2021 as we waited an outcome from the EU-UK partnership agreement; the annual negotiations between the UK and EU couldn’t take place until the outcome of the agreement was reached. This means in 2021 recreational anglers are required to release any bass caught in January and February and will be limited to a bag limit of two bass per day, of at least 42cm in length, from March until November 2021. However, this may be amended in spring 2021 to take into account any changes and adjustments after annual fishing negotiations are carried out with the EU in the coming weeks. Bluefin Tuna

With British waters now welcoming back a thriving population of bluefin tuna safeguarding their future is more important than ever. Together with Bluefin Tuna UK, the Angling Trust have campaigned with the Thunnus Project UK for a permanent tagging project in association with recreational anglers for a catch-and-release fishery.

Shark Science and Research

Last year the Angling Trust joined forces with the Shark Angling Club of Great Britain to collaborate with shark science researchers in the UK to tag sharks on recreational angling charters. This project will enable recreational sea anglers to play a vital role in the scientific research of these majestic animals, ultimately enabling better protections to allow for these highly threatened species to thrive.

Saving Your Bass

Bass stocks crashed in 2015 after many years of commercial overfishing. They are now beginning to recover, slowly, after five years of EU conservation measures. The Angling Trust has been at the forefront of the battle for bass and bass fishing since 2010. With the UK leaving the EU we are campaigning for recreational bass angling to be recognised as the most valuable way of utilising UK bass stocks in the future.

Saving Your Wrasse

The Angling Trust is campaigning to protect wild wrasse from the South coast of England being used as ‘cleaner fish’ in the Scottish salmon farming industry. Every year thousands of English wrasse -- a prime species for anglers – are shipped live destined for Scottish salmon cages. Is this sustainable? We are demanding an end until the impact on English wrasse populations, and the rocky reef habitats they live in, are assessed.
