Fit Got Real – join in with #thisgirlcan #getfishing
Angling has once again joined in with Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign for the launch of the latest phase of the campaign – Fit Got Real – which aims to to tackle the inequalities in levels of exercise between different social groups of women and help more women take part in physical activity.
As a key partner in the campaign, the Angling Trust and its Get Fishing initiative will be supporting This Girl Can with free angling events and activity on social media to help inspire women to have a go at fishing – an all-inclusive, healthy, and accessible sport that fits with busy modern lives.
This Girl Can has already encouraged 2.9 million women to become more active but there’s even more to be done to get more women fishing, and you can help! In the next phase the Angling Trust will help This Girl Can reach women who are inactive or less active, from low income backgrounds, black, Asian, and ethnically diverse communities and teenagers as well as the existing community of women anglers.
The campaign aims to inspire and motivate women with its new Fit Got Real film which shows women exercising their own way – running around a park pushing their child in a pram, hula hooping at home and learning to swim using YouTube – the message is that it all counts as exercise.
We’ve already heard some great stories from women about how angling has helped them stay active and helped their physical or mental health and wellbeing despite it appearing to be an unconventional way of exercising…
Instagram celebs Megan from FamilyFishingUK and ‘Fishing Mum’ Stacie, Ladies Carp Team England Captain Bev Clifford founder of Ladies Fishing UK Anne Woodcock, CEO Sarah Collins and Bridget Dawson from national angling charity Get Hooked on Fishing, The Big Fish star Jo Stephenson, top angling guide and celeb Marina Gibson, Claire Cummins and Ladies Fishing Academy, Heather Lauriston, Benita Del Pino and Sue Arthur as well as young anglers Isabelle, Amelia and Chloe have all sent us their pictures and stories. But, we want to hear from YOU too!
GET INVOLVED: We encourage you to share stories about women who’ve discovered that going fishing is a fantastic way to get active, reconnect with nature and enjoy being outdoors!
This is how we’ll be asking you to join in for a week from Friday October 26th to Friday November 2nd: Simply tweet or post pictures, video or stories on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and use the two hashtags #thisgirlcan and #getfishing together to connect the community of women anglers of all ages and abilities.
Check out our This Girl Can Get Fishing Gallery too! If you’d like your pics adding to the gallery just email them to [email protected]
It would be great if your posts show how angling can help women of all ages and backgrounds to get up, out and active, even if it’s just for a short time when you or your family go fishing.
You’re also invited to come to our free Get Fishing events where women of all ages can try fishing for the first time. These sessions for beginners and families, are friendly and unintimidating with knowledgeable, welcoming and qualified angling coaches and experienced volunteers on hand to help you experience the excitement of catching your first fish. All our This Girl Can events will be listed at Get Fishing Events and tackle and bait are included on the day.
We really look forward to sharing your #thisgirlcan #getfishing stories this October the 26th and in the days after.
