John edges into Fisho Final
Perfect fishing conditions and a bit of room led to a great match at Monk Lakes, near Maidstone for the eighteenth round of FishoMania qualification. The anglers recorded five weights over 200lb, and a further fourteen weights over 100lb which led to the closest finish we have seen in this competition for years, with just one fish separating the top four anglers.
The ‘lucky’ qualifying angler was John Light Snr, who now joins his son John Light Jnr in the finals after he was awarded a place in the Junior match only last week, Could they make it a clean sweep? John drew end peg 113, not a particularly favoured draw and a peg that hasn’t won a big match at Monks for many a year. For John though the peg turned out to be full of carp, clearly visible cruising under the surface, fishing shallow with 6mm pellet he ‘mugged’ his way to close to 200lb, and in the final hour added another 50lb on pellet fished down the edge, to give him a total weight of 253lb 2oz.
The 2oz proved crucial as on peg 70 Adam Southgate had a blinding last couple of hours catching carp on paste down the edge to pull himself back into contention, but agonizingly weighed in 253-0-0, just 3oz short of the win.
Bookies favorite on peg 67 was Ross Harold, who has qualified twice from that peg already, made it close once again when he put 250lb 8oz and Tom Edwards took 4th place from peg 123 with 247-8-0.
Many thanks to Morgan and his team on an excellent match. Our next qualifier is on Weston Pools this Wednesday, which is a Sellout, however tickets are now available for Heronbrook Fisheries this Saturday on the New Website.
